The eyes are always the first place to give our age away, but it really IS possible to fight back. That’s the verdict of the women who tested the latest eye creams for The Real Beauty Awards 2021 and saw a genuine difference to wrinkles, dark circles and bags.
So how does it work? We handpicked the latest eye creams and serums and sent them to real women to try. It’s their reviews, and nothing else, that decided who triumphed in The Real Beauty Awards, a totally independent trial with each shortlisted product tested by five women.
Don’t shop for skincare until you’ve read their verdict.

Premium eye cream (£40+)
WINNER: Elizabeth Arden Retinol Ceramide Line Erasing Eye Cream, £50 here
(Image: Elizabeth Arden)
Proof you CAN use retinol around the eyes. Every single tester saw an improvement to wrinkles, and we also heard great things about bags and dark circles.
Tester says “I saw that my under-eyes were plumped and refreshed. There was a clear reduction in puffiness and dark circles, and a massive reduction in the fine lines around my eyes. I received a lot of comments about how I looked younger and fresher – I assumed this was to do with the eye cream as I hadn’t made any other changes to my make-up or beauty regime.”
HIGHLY COMMENDED: bareMinerals AGELESS Phyto-Retinol Eye Cream, £40 here
A brand clearly doing something very impressive with a plant-based retinol alternative.
Tester says: “Very good for wrinkles – after four weeks the ones around my eyes were blurred and looked visibly softer. My eye contour looked lifted. Friends all asked what beauty products I used as they noticed the lack of life lines around my eyes.”
HIGHLY COMMENDED: StriVectin Intensive Eye Concentrate for Wrinkles PLUS, £58 here
Every tester told us they would use this again, and reading their reviews it wasn’t hard to see why.
Tester says: “It’s the only eye cream I’ve tried where I could see a difference! Wrinkles and bags/dark circles are far less noticeable. Texture is good so it glides on without dragging skin, and absorbs easily and quickly. What’s not to like?!”
Mass market eye cream (under £40)

This scooped the top slot with some excellent all-round rejuvenating effects.
Tester says: “I have deeper lines which were considerably improved by the end of this trial. I had a more wide awake look. People have commented on how bright and firm my eye area looks. After a month it’s made such a positive difference.”
HIGHLY COMMENDED: No7 Pure Retinol Eye Cream, £24.95 here
This new retinol eye cream from Boots certainly hit the spot for testers
Tester says: “The results are great. My bags and dark circles were greatly reduced, almost to the point of looking refreshed after a night’s sleep. I noticed finer lines reduced towards the end of the four weeks. I was told that my eyes looked great by a friend I have known for eight years who has never commented before.”
HIGHLY COMMENDED: Super Facialist Retinol+ Anti Ageing Firming Eye Cream, £17 here

It’s that R word yet again – anyone else seeing a trend this year?
Tester says: “As a tired-looking nurse working long hours, I was keen to try a product to help lift my eye area. I kept this in the fridge and this seemed to work for me as under my eyes looked instantly lifted. After four weeks of use, I have a fresher looking appearance. My mum said: ‘You’re looking well, your eyes are sparkling’.”
